If you've tried hiring out dresses with a normal Shopify product, you've probably hit a problem: after a booking or two, the dress shows as sold out even though it's back on the rack. This guide explains why, then walks through setting up proper rental bookings.
Why a normal Shopify product doesn't work for rentals
Shopify inventory is designed for retail. Every order subtracts one from the product's stock, and Shopify doesn't know the item will be returned. That leads to three common problems:
- Dresses show as sold out after a few orders, even when they're available.
- There are no dates, so customers can't choose when they need the dress and you can't stop overlapping bookings.
- No bonds, returns or buffers: nothing handles refundable bonds, return dates or time for cleaning.
To take rental bookings you need a rental booking app that tracks availability by date instead of by stock count.
What a rental booking setup needs
| Need | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Date picker on the product page | Customers choose their dates and see what's free. |
| Automatic date blocking | Booked dates can't be booked again. |
| Buffer days | Time for postage, returns and cleaning between hires. |
| Rental pricing by length | Different prices for 4-day, 8-day or other hires. |
| Bond and cleaning fee | Charged at checkout with the rental. |
| Booking management | Track dispatch, returns, late fees and bond refunds. |
Step 1: Remove any other rental apps
Two rental apps on one store will conflict. Uninstall or disable old rental or booking apps, and remove their blocks and embeds from your theme. How to remove other rental apps
Step 2: Install a rental booking app and set your rules
Install The Dress Rental App from the Shopify App Store. The quick setup wizard asks nine questions about your stock, bond, cleaning fee, rental length and delivery, and configures the rules for you. Quick setup wizard
Step 3: Set up rental lengths and prices
For different prices by hire length, add a variant option called Duration to your products with values like 4 Days and 8 Days, and price each one. If every hire has the same length, you can use a single price instead. Duration-based rentals
Step 4: Configure delivery and buffers
Turn on the delivery methods you offer and set, for each one:
- how many days' notice you need before a rental can start,
- buffer days before and after the rental, and
- any weekdays rentals can't start on.
These rules decide which dates the calendar offers. Delivery settings
Step 5: Import your rental products
Add your dresses to the app one by one, in bulk by product type, or automatically whenever you create a new product. Import rental products
Step 6: Add the booking calendar to your theme
In the Shopify theme editor, switch on the Rental cart protection app embed and add the Rental Widget block to your product template. The calendar appears only on products you've imported. Add the rental calendar
Step 7: Test a booking end to end
- Open a rental product on your storefront.
- Choose a size, length, delivery method and dates.
- Add it to the cart and complete a test checkout.
- Check the booking appears in Bookings and the dates are now blocked.
Frequently asked questions
Can Shopify do rentals without an app?
Not properly. Shopify has no built-in way to book by date, block booked dates, add return buffers or charge bonds, so a rental booking app is needed.
Should I turn off Shopify inventory tracking for rental products?
The Dress Rental App tracks rental availability by date in the app, and its rental inventory tools don't change your Shopify stock. Shopify's own stock count can still fall with each order, though, and if it reaches zero Shopify may treat the variant as sold out. That's why many rental stores turn off Track quantity on rental variants, or allow selling when out of stock. If you're unsure, contact support before changing it.
Can I rent and sell the same dress?
Yes. Add a variant with a sell label such as "Buy". You can hide the Buy option while the dress has upcoming rentals.
Does this work with Shopify POS?
Yes. Staff can create rental bookings in store from a tile in Shopify POS. Shopify POS rentals
